Having received news of African Openbills at Tomisan's Abbatoir near Voelvlei Dam and realising that I was running out of opportunities to see and photograph this species (which has had a mini irruption into our area) for my new personal challenge to try and see all birds, mammals, reptiles and frogs within 250km of where I live, I decided to shoot out there this morning quickly to see if I could find the birds. Arriving at the farm, I quickly worked out where the large congregation of birds was and then set about searching through them. With large numbers of Great White Pelicans and at least 20 White Storks (quite late in the season for them to still be around) present, perhaps the most surprising things to me was the good numbers of White-necked Ravens there. The farm was a fair way from any sort of mountainous habitat which is their preferred habitat, so obviously the constant food source was a good drawcard for them. After a fair bit of time, I eventually managed to locate 2 African Openbills and managed some rather poor and distant photos of them. Unfortunately, due to the layout of the farm and all the water around, there was no way that I could get any closer to them or into a better position to improve the angle of the light, so I will have to settle for what I got. But, at least, I now have them "ticked off" and photographed for my challenge, because once this irruption disappears, who knows when the next African Openbill will be recorded in our area?!
