Having not done any local herping for quite some time, Margaret and I joined Barrie Rose, Rob Leslie and Cliff and Suretha Dorse for a outing to the West Coast National Park specifically to look for reptiles. Arriving there while it was still fairly cold, we immediately headed to one of our favourite spots and started looking. Almost instantly, we were rewarded with a Karoo Sand Snake and, as the morning progressed we found a good number of reptiles representing several different species. The highlight for me was eventually catching up with a Herald Snake which was a full lifer for me (believe it or not!). This fairly common species has managed to elude me for many years, so it was great to actually find a few of them. Another highlight was getting a photographic mammal lifer in the form of Southern African Pygmy Mouse. All of the species encountered today were good additions to my personal challenge list and I am really looking forward to adding to that as time goes on. Birdwise, we didn't really encounter anything too special, but , then again, we weren't really looking either...
