Beaufort West

Up early this morning and we were joined by friend Japie Claassen who took us out to the spot where he had been seeing the larks. Almost instantly on arrival, 3 birds flew in to drink right in front of us. It was probably one of the easiest Western Cape ticks we have had in a very long time! After spending a bit of time at the waterhole with upwards of 20 birds coming in to drink, we then headed off to see what else we could find. Not too far into our drive, we came across several Desert Cisticolas which was a Western Cape photographic lifer for me and a full Western Cape lifer for Greta. After enjoying these birds for a while, we continued along our route and managed to pick up a number of rather good birds for the province although we had already seen them previously in the Western Cape. These included Black-throated Canary (in reasonable numbers) and Scaly-feathered and Red-headed Finches. By midday, it was time to start packing up and heading back home, but we were all extremely satisfied with our quick jaunt to Beaufort West which netted us 2 new birds for the province in as many days, something which has not happened in a very long time!
